Vladimir Guerrero Jr Blasts off Shohei Ohtani as Toronto Defeat Dodgers to Tie World Series at 2-2

Only 24 hours after staggering through one of the most exhausting defeats in World Series history, the Blue Jays played with complete command.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr smashed a two-run homer and Shane Bieber provided a composed start as Toronto beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 in Game 4 on Tuesday night at their home ballpark, squaring the Fall Classic at two wins apiece and ensuring the series will return to Canada.

Toronto had spent the early hours of the next day processing their marathon Game 3 loss – tied for the lengthiest World Series game ever – a loss that denied them the chance to take the lead in the matchup and depleted both relief corps. Skipper Schneider insisted later that “the Dodgers took a game, not the championship”. A day later, his squad offered convincing evidence.

Initial Action

The Dodgers again struck first. Muncy walked in the second, advanced on a base hit and scored on HernĂĄndez's fly out. But the early breakthrough did not shake a Toronto team that topped MLB with 49 comeback wins this year.

They responded immediately in the third. Lukes hit a one away base hit to centre and Vladimir Guerrero Jr stepped in hunting a curveball. Shohei Ohtani threw a sweeper up and Guerrero drove it screaming over the left-center wall. It was his first long hit of the World Series and his seventh home run this playoffs – a new team mark – restoring the Blue Jays's lead after 13 scoreless innings and changing the momentum of the game.

Ohtani's Night

That hit also halted Ohtani's record-setting streak of 11 straight plate appearances getting on base. The dual-threat phenomenon had smashed two homers and reached safely a historic nine times in the Dodgers' Game 3 walk-off. But on Tuesday, he took the mound on limited rest – his briefest ever – after requiring an IV to recover from the previous marathon.

His fastball velocity sat below his seasonal average and he labored more as the contest wore on. Nonetheless, he showed glimpses of his typical command, setting down 11 of 12 after Guerrero Jr's homer and striking out six. He even walked in the first to extend his Fall Classic streak. But the Blue Jays made him work: six hits and four runs were credited to him in over six innings.

Late Game Rally

The bigger problem for Los Angeles was what came next when Ohtani eventually ran out of steam.

Varsho opened the seventh inning with a sharp hit to right field, and Ernie Clement smashed a double off the fence to put two on with no outs. Dave Roberts had no option but to remove Ohtani, who departed to a roaring applause from the home crowd. The Los Angeles' bullpen could not complete the escape.

Anthony Banda inherited the jam and immediately fell behind. Giménez battled to a 3-2 count before driving in Varsho with a base hit to left. Ty France came up next with a groundout to make it 4-1, and that was enough to knock the pitcher out of the contest. Blake Treinen came in next but also was unable to stem the rally: Bo Bichette and Addison Barger punched run-scoring singles through the diamond, completing a four-score barrage that pushed the margin to 6-1.

Toronto's Toughness

The Blue Jays's ability to withstand early setbacks and respond has characterized their whole run. They once again succeeded without Springer, the injured leadoff hitter who exited the third game after straining his right side.

Bieber, meanwhile, was exactly what the Blue Jays required. Acquired mid-season while completing rehab from elbow surgery, the ex- award-winning winner stranded several runners and silenced the Dodgers' dangerous lineup. He allowed one earned run on four base hits and three free passes before Schneider called on rookie left-hander Fluharty to face the core of the order in the sixth. He required just 4 throws to retire Muncy and Edman, protecting a fragile advantage that quickly grew safe.

Converted starting pitcher Chris Bassitt then pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings as the Dodgers' bats kept to sputter. The Dodgers have produced only three scores over their last 20 innings, an abrupt downturn for a club that ranked among baseball's top lineups all season.

Final Moments

The Dodgers scraped a run in the ninth when Tommy Edman grounded out to bring home Teoscar HernĂĄndez after a walk and Muncy's two-base hit put runners on base. But Louis Varland finished the game without permitting a comeback to develop.

Following a game when Toronto left a Fall Classic-record 19 runners and fell apart after repeated of wasted chances, the fourth contest was ruthlessly efficient. Six different Blue Jays collected base hits, 5 drove in runs and the team converted nearly every run-scoring opportunity presented in the final innings.

Next Up

The victory ensures the World Series trophy will be presented at their home stadium, where the Blue Jays have not celebrated a title since Joe Carter's iconic walk-off homer in '93. They now are aware they are assured a packed crowd in Canada on Friday evening – and possibly the next day – no matter what occurs next in Los Angeles.

The fifth game approaches with the matchup even and momentum shifting north. Dodgers left-hander Blake Snell (3-1, 2.42 ERA) will attempt to halt the Toronto's momentum. Toronto respond with first-year player Yesavage (2-1, 4.26 ERA) in a rematch of the opener, when the Toronto chased Snell early in an decisive victory.
