UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."

The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
