The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Land the Job That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and ask for a job. Additionally, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
