This production, however, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed version circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment instead of a challenge. The Crafted Strongman Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to craft a made-to-measure persona of the president. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals. “In Russia, the manufactured Putin has long eclipsed the actual person.” Screen-Based Support One recent example is a TV series launched last fall, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from chaos. While the character's name a different name, the implication is clear: the hero must be a familiar security officer. Western portrayals frequently result in buttressing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to undermine the leader's mythology by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him. The Myth of the Reluctant Leader In the film, Putin is presented as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, seeking enduring influence. This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, these events ever happened. The Truth Behind the Selection Nobody ever begged him to take the job. The presidency was effectively a casting call with many contenders. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country in practice. His list featured various figures, including a reformer later murdered and a security service director. According to an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the future president merely met the required parameters: loyal, from the security services, and politically neutral. A property developer familiar with the process stated the primary requirement was manageability and faithfulness, not strength. “They didn’t need a powerful leader, they needed someone controllable, someone who would follow instructions.” Constructing the Spy Legend Experts agree that the notion of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Stories about his “recruitment work” in Dresden fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not engaged in field operations. Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “007” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as James Bond. His harder version led Russian media and social media to draw visual parallels with their leader. Mashup posters swapping Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a local secret agent. A Diplomatic Opportunity? Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a small victory. The film's omission of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering the past decade, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda. Domestically, Putin is often an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. His influence is hinted at through portraits or calls “from above”. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it might seek to examine.
