🔗 Share this article A Tale of Surprising Generosity: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Ground Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. My plan was to arrange a place to stay upon arrival, however when I arrived, a big convention was taking place and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies. Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could bed down in the airport – but soon learned that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes all night. With no idea how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and began walking towards a gaming venue, thinking I could pass the night somewhere that was open through the night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing the admissions interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible. Our society requires more folks like that woman. Apparently, I appeared confused since a young woman noticed me loitering in downtown and inquired whether I needed help. I recounted my predicament and immediately she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the local university – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered some food: one of the stuffed baguettes she had from her work shift. I had access to a hot shower and somewhere safe and secure to sleep. With hindsight, it’s clear to me the significant risk she took as a woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – and remain very grateful. I didn’t end up attending ANU, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. I hope the universe has rewarded her act of kindness tenfold. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
